Frequently Asked Questions HALFWAY HOT SPRINGS

Nakusp   |   British Columbia   |   Canada

Yes there is!  Halfway is a rec site that is maintained by BC Parks.  There are 20 vehicle accessible camping sites and 20+ hike in sites as well as numerous overflow sites scattered throughout the area.  The site is maintained and very well cared for by Bob Moody.  There is a $15 per day camping fee which is in effect from May 1 - Oct. 31.  See here for more details.

According to popular opinion, winter is arguably the best time to visit Halfway.  However, the road is almost never traversable from late November until as late as April.  Many visitors access Halfway during the winter by hiking, snowshoeing or snowmobiling in.

Even if the road is drivable, winter conditions can change very fast which has resulted in people being stranded so please exercise caution when attempting to drive up to the springs.

Yes there are!  Bob has built a great cedar building with two rooms for visitors to change in and there are hangers on the outside deck that is covered to store your stuff while relaxing in the springs.

Food, water, good hiking shoes and of course, your swim gear.

A great Halfway insider tip is to wear water shoes as well.  This makes walking over the rocks down at the river pools much easier - especially if you want to venture into the river for a nice cold plunge.

Depending on the time of year, they're tolerable.  Mosquitos are less than most people anticipate and the biggest complaint with regards to insects is the horse flies.  Bringing good bug repellant is never a bad idea when venturing out into the back country.

Halfway is 11km up Halfway River FSR off Highway 23 between Nakusp and Halcyon Hot Springs Resort.  For more detailed directions, please visit our comprehensive directions page here.

There are numerous out houses in the camp ground as well as down at the springs.  From May 1 - Oct 31, they are cleaned and maintained regularly by Bob and the other folks who help him.  We recommend bringing your own toilet paper - especially in the off season when it is not being maintained.

And please take care to keep the place clean.  Pack out what you pack in and please respect the people who work hard to keep this place pristine and well maintained.

At this time, day use is free and it's never a bad idea to bring a tip for Bob and team who more than deserve it for the amazing work they have put in to bring Halfway to the condition that it is and continues to be 🙂

Camping fees and information can be found here.
